Graham Wood – Jazz Juice

Friday, October 1st, 2010

A calm simple piano melody builds into a fiery swell of passion, like the sun storms it bursts with heat brewing down below bursting out with clusters or smooth rhythmic touches that occasionally boom, then retort as the horns speak in alien tongues, transmitting an intelligence not born of academic sway, but of experience that only a well traveled cosmonaut can aspire to.

As the bass bends & jangles like a huge rubber band amongst the stars, you come to the realization that this is one hell of a Jazz ride as you settle back to earth.

Lead by Perth’s Jazz Don Graham Wood, Graham Wood Trio + 2’s Jazz Juice comes spitting at you like some cosmic milk full of radioactive bursts of brilliance from a fine line of musicians setting sail for Saturn.

G-Train and Label Launch!

Monday, December 21st, 2009

The Graham Wood QuintetSlow Release is proud to announce the label’s first professional album release by The Graham Wood Quintet: The G-Train CD (available in store now!)

The CD and Label launch is being held tonight at the:

Ellington Jazz Club
191 Beaufort St Perth 6000
Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd December 2009 at 7.30pm

CDs are available on the night for the special launch price of $20.

Tonight is a celebration of the release of Graham’s 3rd CD as leader. The G Train was recorded over 2 days in 2008 and features Graham on piano with Matt Jodrell (trumpet) Carl Mackey (sax) Sam Anning (bass) and Daniel Susnjar (drums).
The tunes on this CD were written by Graham on a 3 week journey through Japan and The USA in 2008. There is a common train theme to the tunes and hence the title of the CD.

We are pleased to be joined by Daniel Susnjar who is returning from the USA for Christmas and will fortunately be here to perform. Graham and Carl are the other players on the release who will be present but unfortunately Matt Jodrell and Sam Anning will not be able to be in Perth for this launch. They will be replaced by Paul Pooley on bass and Ricki Mallet on Trumpet.

This evening will also celebrate the launch of the new WAAPA record label entitled “Slow Release”. Graham’s CD will be the first featured release and we look forward to many more interesting musical offerings from WAAPA staff and students.

The G Train

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Graham WoodSlow Release Music presents the upcoming album release from The Graham Wood Quintet, The G Train.

The tunes on this release were composed during a 3-week trip to Japan and the USA in June 2008. There is an obvious train theme, which I guess is part of being on the road and in the cities that I love. The title track of this CD really reflects the experiences I had on some colourful late night jazz journeys on that train.

The G Train will be available as a CD and Download purchase, and will be released in December, 2009
