Aletheia: Macrology

Macrology is a recording of a live internet-streaming concert at the Velvet Lounge in Perth on the 9th of May, 2011, with half the ensemble on the stage, and the other half across the country.

A live collaboration between the Ethernet Orchestra at the University of Technology, Sydney, and the Aletheia Internet Streaming Ensemble at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, the performance made use of internet lag as a live improvisational tool.

The sound generated by members of Aletheia, sent through the front pair of speakers at the Velvet Lounge, was streamed live to Sydney for the performers to improvise around. Sydney’s sound was then sent back to the Velvet Lounge and routed through the rear pair of speakers, as well as to the mixer for further processing.

The result was akin to a performance using a 6500 kilometre tape loop with an indeterminate and fluctuating speed.
